Transitioning into my Portfolio Project

Welcome to my first blog posting of my portfolio project. I am very excited to get started with this project as everything we have learned in class has prepared me to succeed with this project. However, I have many ideas and am having trouble deciding the base of my film opening. Due to this, I have chosen to organize all my thoughts out on paper, and decide which ones I would be able to execute the best.

After organizing my thoughts out on paper, I have narrowed down what I would like to see throughout my project and what i need to have in my project. I have also decided to approach the project by identifying and establishing conflict between characters, background (setting, character, plot), and settings. The next step is to choose two different genre's, do some research on both of them including its target audience, basic needs, classic shots, angles, and music that are typically included within the genre's of choice

Music Marketing

My group and I were assigned to research a genre (style) of music. The genre my group was assigned to was Alternative. Once we did our research on our genre, learning about artists like Tame Impala, Cold play, ect, we concluded that this style of music was mainly targeted to young adults and teens which meant colorful and bright posters and videos would be the most ideal to promote this style of music.

After we did our research on our genre, we were presented with 4 songs per group that correlated with the genre we had previously researched. We were to pick one song, then create an artist, music video, and market it using all the tactics we had researched.

My groups song choice was, "Night Running by, Cage the Elephant and Beck". For our planning process, we created a schedule that organized our goals most efficiently, aid us and our process of making the music video.

One marketing strategy we will be using is social media. Our research showed us, if we would like to reach younger audiences we would have to create short videos online to keep up with those that have shorter attention spans. When you utilize social media it also creates a connection between the fans and the artist.

Genre Research

Musicals

Musicals are such a diverse genre of media. This is due to the variety of sub-genres that could be matched with a musical. For a piece of media to be considered a musical it needs to include an element of song throughout the dialogue and usually dance is incorporated. Musicals often have characteristics of, storytelling, emotional characters, romance, nostalgia, and of course choreography.

The general target audience for musicals is kids and teens. This is due to the thrilling songs that attract and compel young children. Teens are also attracted to musicals because of how most musicals, have a character that sings and rambles on about there life problems which could be relatable to teens current problems.

Marketing for musicals usually includes trailers with bright colors and songs exclusivly featured in the musical.

LaLa Land: This film embodies the musical genre through elaborate singing and dancing coordination. It executes an exciting feel throughout the movie and especially in the opening number "Another Day of Sun" It accomplishes all this while having that classic Hollywood charm. This movie also has a strong sense of nostalgia to it.

Chicago: This movie embodies the musical genre by portraying jazz and the early 1920s through song and dance. The emotional stakes of the actors throughout the film are high as Roxie Hart is convicted for murder. Even with the stories dark elements, the film able to bring light a light and hopeful perspective to the viewer.

Representation

"How I met your mother" is a comedic sitcom. Released in 2005, the popular television show focuses on a group of five people as they navigate their way through adulthood, experience romantic relationships, and work crisis all while living in the "big city". The show went on to produce nine seasons as the show gained lots of popularity.

Representation in media is shown through the ways a content creator chooses to portray reality. This is usually done through a character's aspects or characteristics. These adjectives could be presented through Exoticizing, De-Centering, or Othering.

One of the main characters, Barney Stinson is a business man. Throughout the show, he is stereotyped with the classic "business man" physical qualities and personality traits. Some of theses include, a professional outfit and clean look at all times. This is constantly seen throughout the show and in Stinson's catchphrase, "Suit up!". Barney Stinson traits are often seen as othering. This is due to the directors choice to make the business man persona more stuck up and less hard working. This strays away from the target group.

Sound Project

Throughout our lessons on sound we learned, about different sound techniques and how they impact the viewing process. Sound can manipulate the way we perceive things by adding and emotional impact to a certain medium. We learned everything from synchronous sounds to sound perspective.

For the Sound Project, my partner and I were directed to create a scene solely made out of sound effects and foley sounds. This "scene" must occur in about 1-2 minutes time. Foley sounds are sounds we would have to create out of objects. We were instructed to input at at least four of these into our project.

Our approach to completing this project was to begin by making a brainstorm outline. This outline would break down the sounds we would utilize to create our scene.

Through out the scene we used sound effects. These were provided to us through websites our teacher listed for us to use.

I believe my partner and I did a great job of creating a story and picking out what sounds would complement each other while building the story and characters based on just sounds. However, I would like to improve our editing skills. Some of the sound effects we used did not blend with each other and sounded very artificial. Overall, I enjoyed the project.

OWF (One Word Film)

My partner and I were instructed to create a shot film based off of an assigned word. We had received the word "appreciative". This film had to represent the term without using any words throughout the film, including the assigned one. The goal was to achieve others to be able to guess your word without any prior knowledge to the specific word.

Our approach to the project was to begin by brainstorming idea's then create a story board. Our story board listed idea's of different shots, angles, and editing techniques to use through out our film. The story board helped us visualize how each scene would look and what shots and angles would be the most flattering and make the most sense in our film. I edited my film by using I-Movie. I made sure to utilize the editing techniques we learned in class.

I think my project could have been executed better. I believe with time my filming and editing will improve causing future projects to be more visually appealing. I think our planning was well done for our project as it was a great reference while filming and helped visualize the end result. Overall, I enjoyed the process of creating our "One Word Film".

That's a Wrap!
